No offense, but...

Is it possible to insult an American? We definitely fling insults around at each other all of the time, but that's different. Those are hurtful attacks, and yet, when it comes from someone else... it just slides off our backs.

I took to the streets of Quora to see what I could find, and I came out having left my mark. Take that!

Insults: What are some good ways to insult an American? (since deleted by Quora)

My response:

You can't. (since deleted by Quora)

But why is that?

I have a few theories:

  1. Pervasiveness of Sarcasm

This is the main reason that I think Americans don't get offended easily: sarcasm. Good luck trying to get a punchline across with other people. No offense, but we lay down mad jokes that y'all down pick up. It's okay, but if you understood sarcasm, you'd understand why we don't get offended easily. It gives us thick skin.

  1. Melting Pot Culture

People emigrate from all over the world and come to America. It's ingrained in our history. We're all essentially immigrants. What does this influx of cultures and customs have to do with insults? We have people bumping elbows all of the time. We offend each other on a daily basis. It's bound to happen with such a diverse population, so we've really seen it all (on average).

  1. Openness of Opinion and Free Speech

It's one of our basic human rights, provided by our Constitution's Bill of Rights. For the most part (read: except hate speech), we can say whatever we want in America, and we're proud of that fact. That also means there is a lot less that we hear that offends us because we've heard it all. Sure, some people still get bent out of shape about things, but I would say you could be overly sensitive, too.
